About Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children (SBCWC)

The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children (SBCWC) was opened in 1999 in response to the high rates of violence against women and children on the Cape Flats near Cape Town. We provide essential, cost-free services 365 days a year to abused women and children employing a comprehensive range of services for the effective treatment and prevention of violence against women and children.

We were the first ‘one-stop’ centre in South Africa.

The Saartjie Baartman Centre’s multi-disciplinary approach brings together various organizations to create a unified, on-site service delivery model. This model effectively manages, treats, and prevents violence against women and children, working collaboratively with government bodies and civil society organizations to advocate for the rights of victims and foster community-based solutions to end gender-based violence.

Holistic Services for Survivors

SBCWC is a leading national site for providing holistic, integrated services to survivors of violence. We directly manage a 24-hour crisis response programme, residential shelter and housing for abused women and children, psycho-social support including children’s counselling, a substance abuse programme, and accredited job-skills training.

Pilot of the Khuseleka Model

We have been fortunate to have been selected as the organisation to pilot the Khuseleka model, a multi-sectoral approach in collaboration with key government departments and institutions designed to uphold all basic victim rights as encapsulated in the South African Victims Charter and the UN Conventions protecting the rights of women and children.

Impact Since 2020

Since 2020, our impact has been both significant and measurable. We've supported over 2,500 women and children. More than 85% of those who participated in our programs have successfully transitioned into safer environments.

Additionally, we've hosted over 150 community workshops, empowering local families with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive.

Our efforts have also contributed to an 8% reduction in domestic violence reports among participants. As we continue to grow, these numbers reflect the tangible change we’re making in the community.
